Cruising Down Memory Lane Many of us loathe traveling on crowded public transports, wishing to own our personal cars. Some of us may be bored with Singapore’s limited attractions and will hop on the first flight out of our country whenever there is a long weekend. However, there are many among us who have no chance to even step out of their homes. Some of the elderly among us who stay alone can hardly walk outside their homes. Some of them do not even have any visitors, much less someone to take them out for a walk, even in their neighbourhood. Ironically, they were the pioneers of Singapore who have worked hard and given their youth to building the modern Singapore that we today enjoy. Yet, some of them have not even been able to travel on the MRT. They can only watch on TV the transformation around Chinatown, Singapore River and the Marina Bay waterfront. We wanted to change this, even if only for a day. On the week before Vesak Day in 2005, SPACES Community organized an outing for the elderly to places where they once frequented. We provided wheelchairs for them to--quite literally--cruise down memory lane. The Project An outing on wheelchairs to visit Raffles Place, Singapore River, the Marina Bay waterfront, City Hall, War Memorial Park, Esplanade Park, various religious sites in Chinatown, and more.
