Project Golden Girls

Inspiration

We all worry about growing old – wondering how we will live our lives and whether our loved ones will still be around us then.

Project Golden Girls was inspired by that famous sitcom about how, at the end of it all, even though we may have nothing and no one else but our friends, life can still be great! This project aimed to give some senior citizens and their families a memorable and fun-filled evening. In the process, we hoped that friendships might develop from there.

Who, When, Where and How?

In conjunction with Senior Citizens’ Week 2004, SPACES Community organized a 2-Day-1-Night holiday resort stay at Downtown East and hosted a BBQ dinner with games and entertainment for about 200 elderly folks and their families.

SPACES Community organized this event to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Salvation Army’s Bedok Multiservice Centre for the Elderly and in response to the "President’s Challenge 2004: Volunteer A Day, Volunteer with Kindness", a programme initiated by the National Council of Social Service and the Singapore Kindness Movement.

Participants from SPACES Community joined the elderly for a free BBQ dinner starting at 6:30pm and games thereafter until 10:30pm. After that, the elderly and their families enjoyed a relaxing free overnight stay in 26 holiday chalets.
