OUR HISTORY
SPACES started as a counseling and research agency in 2001, co-founded by Jason Wee, an artist-photographer and Clarence Singam. SPACES was set up in response to individuals struggling with self acceptance and self esteem issues. It is currently headed on a voluntary basis by Clarence Singam. When faced with retrenchment in 1999, Clarence decided to take time off to pursue his interest in counseling by enrolling into a Masters Degree in Applied Psychology programme. Clarence is assisted by volunteers Peggy Koh and Daniel Tung. Peggy was a former associate television producer who gave up her career to pursue a postgraduate diploma in counseling while Daniel Tung chose not to pursue a career in the life sciences in which he was trained but opted instead to follow his passion to be a social worker/counselor. The activities of SPACES include face to face counseling, time limited support group programs and training in counseling. Counselees have included persons struggling over self acceptance, relationship, family, sexual orientation and career issues. Since its intial set up, SPACES expanded in 2003 to include a volunteer community service arm headed by Jerry Siah, a young Singaporean entrepreneur with a Bachelor of Engineering (1st Class Honours). After a few years in the United States where he started an engineering company, Jerry returned to Singapore in 2003 and started SPACES Community. He was formerly a volunteer youth befriender with Touch Community Services and a mentor under BP Mentoring Scheme. Our finances are managed by Lehlim who is an accountant and a happily married mother of two. Prior to her work with multinationals Lehlim worked as a tax consultant in one of the major accounting firms. Lehlim joined SPACES because she wanted to develop a more meaningful life and make new friends.
