I-CARE Mission

I-CARE Mission was setup to follow on from the success of Project Muhibah where we painted and cleaned 30 homes of infirm elderly and needy families staying in Toa Payoh estate. Project Muhibah was originally conceived as a one-off project.

However, several volunteers felt the wonderful results would go to waste if there was no after-care. Inspired by the response of these destitute residents to our efforts, Spaces Community decided to expand the original vision to provide infirm and destitute people with continuing care. The result is I-CARE Mission.

The Vision

A society where the poorest people can have their basic needs catered for such that there is dignity and caring in their lives.

The Mission

To provide continuing care to the destitute.

Our Objectives

  1. To provide the destitute with continuing support for their material, health and emotional needs in a manner they can depend on indefinitely.
  2. To meet the basic needs for a person to live in comfort and dignity.

What We Are Doing

I-CARE Mission has gathered a group of volunteers to visit the homes of destitute and infirm people on a regular basis. We will begin by visiting homes in Toa Payoh. Initially, we will make fortnightly visits to each home. Based on the resident’s response, this may increase to weekly visits.

Each team of volunteers (6 to 8 people) will adopt 2 homes and take turns to visit these 2 homes. This will enable volunteers to develop a deeper bond and a familiarity with the ongoing needs of the “adopted” residents.

Volunteers will help clean the homes, provide companionship, take them out for a meal —essentially look after them.

More Than Weekly Visits

I-CARE Mission is also setup to provide an infrastructure of support and care extending beyond these home visits. Our aim is to provide help when needed. Thus if a resident has a transportation problem, or needs a home visit from a doctor, someone to accompany them to the polyclinic, a plumber or electrician, I-CARE Mission will step in to provide the service. We will also be organizing outings for the residents.

How You Can Help

There are many ways to support the I-CARE Mission. One, adopt a home and be a regular volunteer. Two, if you have a service you can provide now and again, let us know.

Team Structure and Activities

Each team comprises 2 Sub-teams. Each sub-team will consist of 3-4 volunteers. Each team will adopt 2 homes. Each sub-team will visit these 2 homes only once a month. That is to say, each volunteer has to commit only to once-a-month visit to the 2 homes for a total of about 2-3 hours.

Example for Team 1 comprising of Sub-team A and Sub-team B, for a 1-month period:

Week 1: Visit to 2 adopted households by Sub-team A
Week 2: No visit
Week 3: Visit to 2 adopted households by Sub-team B
Week 4: No visit

And so on.

During the visits, volunteers get to interact with the infirm elderly, help out with household chores, befriend the elderly and, even take them out for a meal or just have a drink or watch TV together.

Registration

We are currently looking for adult volunteers to join I-CARE Mission. You need not form your own team, as we will organize the groups.

In order to provide security to the elderly and volunteers, all volunteers must complete a Volunteer Registration Form that will be kept strictly confidential.

Please write to icare@ourspaces.com for the Volunteer Registration Form.

For a start, volunteers must be prepared to commit to visiting the adopted homes at least once a month for the period from April 2005 to August 2005.
