Run With Me

Though I'm Different

In conjunction with the Disability Awareness Public Education (DAPE) Campaign and the Giving Month 2005, SPACES Community and Handicaps Welfare Association (HWA) participated in the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon to raise awareness of disabilities and to raise funds for the building of a multi-purpose court at HWA.

Currently, there is no sporting facility on HWA's premises. Basketball players on wheelchairs have to travel about 20-25 minutes, depending on traffic conditions, to reach the nearest basketball court. Along the route, the basketball players on wheelchairs have to cross a major traffic junction, car parks, roads, pedestrian underpasses, and so on. These major obstacles are common in many parts of Singapore, especially in the Balestier area.

After our pioneering effort working alongside people with disabilities in staging ‘A Nation In Concert’ on 13 August 2005, SPACES Community seeks to continue in its effort to empower those who are wheelchair-bound to lead an active lifestyle.

The fund-raising effort ended on 4 Dec 05 where volunteers participated in the Singapore Marathon 2005. Jerry Siah came in 3rd (gun-time) / 2nd (chip-time) position under CEO Challenge (10km) category. Wheelies from HWA came in top 3 positions under Wheelies category.
